wondering if anyone on the forums here might know of any studios or more specifically recordings that were mixed using a7s for monitors. I'm looking to buy a few new albums and Ive thought about trying to collect a few that were originally mixed that way..

it looks like in most of these pictures, that in studio play back was on a7 but in the booth, common use was 605a or 603a. I suppose that makes sense in that squeezing a pair of a7 into a booth might be a problem. Was more curious to see if any engineers have every explicitly said they used a7 for final mix or final playback testing.Originally Posted by bowtie427ss

No clue if any use them today, but look around and you'll find that most [all?] of the big studio's playback systems in NY, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, LA and no doubt others used the A7-8, though not too many used A7-500 AFAIK, presumably due to not needing fixing what wasn't broke, so all the Capital, etc., artists that recorded back in the '50s, '60s, 70s.
Some were used as monitors, but these were mostly duplexes. What's more important is that they were often used to monitor master tape editing to insure proper playback.

Columbia in NYC . The vynil lathe making room was huge with many machines.They had Altec A 7 to get the work done well an quickly.

It appears that the picture in the video above was taken at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. Not sure that was clarified in the video, I did not watch the whole thing. I found the same picture Looking up the Wrecking Crew on wikipedia after watching a video on youtube of the recording of the Beach Boys song God Only Knows.
